Overcoming Barriers to Exercise
About 7 minutes
Why It Matters
Staying active over the long haul is less about willpower and more about design, weaving movement into the life you already live. The obstacles that trip most of us up are pretty predictable, and so are the ways around them. When you have a few simple workarounds ready, the excuses lose their grip and movement becomes something you do without having to talk yourself into it.
What to Know
Work around the common barriers
Time, energy, and motivation are the usual roadblocks, and each one has a small solution.
- Short on time? Stack movement onto things you already do, like walking during calls or stretching during a show
- Low on energy? Start with just a few minutes; movement often creates the energy you were waiting to feel
- Low on motivation? Make it social, and invite a friend, family member, or coworker to join you
- Bored easily? Keep a jar of one-minute activities and pull one out when you need a nudge
Make the healthy choice the easy choice
A lot of follow-through comes down to setup. When your walking shoes are by the door and a reminder is on your calendar, you spend less willpower getting started. Small nudges like these quietly remove the friction that stops us.
Build it into daily life
Turn a coffee date into a walk, take the stairs, add an extra trip carrying in groceries, or set a gentle reminder to stand and stretch during long stretches of sitting. Turning ordinary moments into chances to move is what makes activity a way of life rather than one more thing on the list.
Start where you are. You do not have to overhaul everything at once. Pick one or two changes that fit your day and grow from there. If you’re starting something new, or you’re managing a health condition, a pregnancy, or an injury, it’s worth discussing with your doctor where to begin. They can help you choose a starting point that fits you.
Try This
Think about the barrier that stops you most often, and pick one small way to work around it this week.
Your One Small Step
Choose the one obstacle that trips you up most, and set up a single workaround for it, like laying out your shoes or scheduling a walk with a friend.
Take a moment
- Which barrier, time, energy, or motivation, gets in your way most often?
- What is one existing daily habit you could attach a bit of movement to?
