Find Your Movement Type

The best exercise is the one you’ll actually do.

About 7 minutes

Up Front: The best exercise is the one you actually enjoy: enjoyment, not intensity, is what keeps you coming back.

Why It Matters

There is no single right way to be active, and that is good news. The most effective movement is not the one that burns the most or looks the most impressive; it is the one you genuinely enjoy enough to keep coming back to. When activity feels like something you look forward to, it quietly becomes part of your life instead of a chore you talk yourself into. This is your invitation to explore a little and find what fits you.

What to Know

Variety keeps it interesting

Doing the same thing every day can get stale fast, and it works only a few parts of your body. Mixing up how you move keeps things fresh and gives your muscles and joints a break from repeating the same motions. A well-rounded week has room for several kinds of movement, each offering something a little different.

  • Cardio, like walking, dancing, or biking, to support your heart and lungs
  • Strength, using weights, bands, or body weight, to keep muscles and bones strong
  • Flexibility, through gentle stretching or easy yoga, to stay limber and relaxed
  • Balance, such as standing on one foot or tai chi, to feel steadier on your feet

Pick what you actually enjoy

You do not need to love every type. Try a few and pay attention to which ones leave you feeling good rather than drained. Maybe dancing lights you up while a formal class does not, or a walk with a friend beats the treadmill every time. There are no wrong answers here, only what fits you.

Look back to move forward

Many people were active and playful earlier in life, then found that work, commutes, and caring for others crowded out the time and energy for it. If that sounds familiar, you are in good company. Your past experiences with movement, the good and the not-so-good, can point you toward what will actually stick now.

  • Recall activities you used to love and could revisit in a simpler form.
  • Notice what made past routines fall away, so you can plan around it.
  • Pay attention to which movements leave you energized rather than drained.
  • Give yourself permission to try something new that simply sounds fun.

Enjoyment is what makes it last

When movement feels like play, you are far more likely to keep it in your life for the long run. Motivation comes and goes, but enjoyment carries you through the days when willpower runs thin. So give yourself full permission to choose the activities that feel good to you.

Start where you are. You do not have to be good at something to enjoy it, and you can begin at whatever level feels comfortable today. If you’re starting something new, or you’re managing a health condition, a pregnancy, or an injury, it’s worth discussing with your doctor where to begin. They can help you choose a starting point that fits you.

Try This

Spend a few minutes thinking about the kinds of movement that appeal to you, and give yourself room to experiment.

Your One Small Step

Pick one type of movement that sounds fun and try it once this week, just to see how it feels.

Take a moment

  • Which type of movement, cardio, strength, flexibility, or balance, are you most drawn to right now?
  • What is one activity you would happily do even if it were not called exercise?
The Bottom Line: Try a mix of cardio, strength, flexibility, and balance, then keep whatever feels like play; enjoyment carries you through the days when willpower runs thin.
