Added Sugar: Spot It & Reduce It
About 7 minutes
Why It Matters
Added sugar has a way of slipping into foods you wouldn’t expect, often under names you might not recognize. This isn’t about cutting sugar down to zero or labeling it the enemy. It’s about learning to spot where it shows up so you can decide how much actually fits your day. Once you can see it clearly, trimming a little here and there feels less like giving something up and more like a small, kind choice for how you want to feel.
What to Know
It hides under many names
On an ingredient list, added sugar wears a lot of disguises. Anything ending in -ose is a sugar, and so are corn sweetener, brown rice syrup, cane juice, and barley malt, among others. Ingredients are listed in order of amount, so when one of these sits near the top, there’s more of it. Products labeled fat-free or low-fat sometimes add sugar back in to make up for flavor, which is worth a second glance.
- On the Nutrition Facts label, “Total Sugars” includes both natural and added sugars. The “Added Sugars” line underneath shows how much of that total was added.
- Scan the ingredient list for -ose words and syrups near the top.
- Give fat-free and low-fat products an extra look, since sugar is a common stand-in for flavor.
Drinks are a big source
For a lot of people, sweetened drinks are the single largest source of added sugar. Sodas, sweetened coffees, sports drinks, and sweet teas can carry a surprising amount, and because they’re liquid, they tend to slip by without filling you up the way food does. That makes drinks one of the easiest places to trim, and small swaps here often add up faster than anywhere else.
- Water it down: mix half sweetened drink with half plain or sparkling water.
- Try water infused with fruit, or unsweetened coffee and tea you flavor yourself.
- When a sweet craving hits, whole fruit like berries can be a satisfying stand-in.
Trim gently, not all at once. You don’t have to swear off sugar to feel a difference. Easing back a little at a time lets your taste adjust, and small, gradual cuts tend to stick far better than an overnight overhaul.
Try This
Take a curious, no-judgment look at where added sugar shows up in a typical day for you. This is about awareness first, so any change you make comes from a place you actually noticed.
Your One Small Step
This week, pick one sweetened drink you have regularly and swap it for a lighter version, whether that’s watering it down, halving it, or choosing an unsweetened option.
Take a moment
- Where does added sugar tend to show up most in your day, and did any source surprise you?
- Which one small swap feels easy enough that you’d actually keep it?
