Why It Matters
Stepping into a new role is easier when you know exactly what's expected — and what isn't. You're the connector and encourager in your building, not the expert with every health answer. By the end of this lesson, you'll know what your building is counting on you to do, how that work is recognized, and where to turn for support — a handful of practical responsibilities you can grow into, not do all at once.
What to Know
What your building is counting on you for
Engage your building
- Promote the challenges, and encourage staff to try NuStart Blocks (our healthy-living lessons) and coaching.
- Run a few wellness activities that fit your building across the year.
- Keep steady, welcome communication — about two to three touchpoints a month, using the ready-made content we provide.
Connect and collaborate
- Team up with people and groups already active in your building.
- Pair with another Champion for support and ideas.
- Use the NuStart resources and pass them along to your staff.
Take part and represent
- Take part yourself. Champions who model the habits inspire others to follow.
- Attend the Coordinated Health Council meetings and join the conversation, and submit a short building report beforehand.
- Contribute one piece to the Friday Notes newsletter each year.
Keep learning and improving
- Complete the Champion Lessons, like this one.
- Complete the All-IN application and Champion self-assessment, now combined into one process.
- Take stock of your building's resources so you know what you have to work with.
The one most Champions find hardest
Of the four above, engaging your building is the one Champions most often ask for help with. You are in good company if that is your answer too. Champions who have been at this a while report something useful: when the ask stays small, people join in, and when it gets pushed hard, they pull back. One Champion put it plainly: “when we keep things simple, they seem to participate BIG.” A practical test is whether your activity needs a minimum number of people. A walk works with one person. Pickleball needs four, and a sign-up sheet brings the problem back.
The full Champion Best Practices guide spells all of this out and is your reference whenever you need it.
How your work is recognized
Your effort is seen. Champion contributions are measured through a simple scorecard that covers building engagement, the practices above, your training and participation, and your collaboration. Recognition includes certificates and mentions in the LSC e-newsletter. Your own recognition runs on three Champion milestones: Trained, Engaged and Leading. Separately, your building can earn an All-IN School medal, scored across 25 criteria, at Honorable Mention, Bronze, Silver or Gold.
You are supported, not on your own
None of this means doing everything alone or building from scratch. NuStart provides ready-to-send content, a resource hub, this training, and a liaison who is here for you. Remember the idea behind the name: integrate with what is already moving in your building. The role is meant to be doable and rewarding, and this training is here to make sure it feels that way.
Bottom line.- Your role has four parts: engage your building, connect and collaborate, take part and represent, and keep learning.
- The full Champion Best Practices guide is your reference for the details.
- You are supported the whole way. You are not doing this alone or from scratch.
