Why It Matters
Stepping into a new role is easier when you know exactly what's expected, and what isn't. You're the connector and encourager in your building, not the expert with every health answer. By the end of this lesson, you'll know what your building is counting on you to do, how that work is recognized, and where to turn for support. The role is a handful of practical responsibilities you can grow into, not do all at once.
What to Know
What your building is counting on you for
Engage your building
- Promote the challenges, and encourage staff to try NuStart Blocks (our healthy-living lessons) and coaching.
- Run a few wellness activities that fit your building across the year.
- Keep steady, welcome communication: about two to three touchpoints a month, using the ready-made content we provide.
Connect and collaborate
- Team up with people and groups already active in your building.
- Pair with another Champion for support and ideas.
- Use the NuStart resources and pass them along to your staff.
Take part and represent
- Take part yourself. Champions who model the habits inspire others to follow.
- Attend the Steering Committee meetings and join the conversation, and submit a short building report beforehand.
- Share a Champion story when you have one worth telling. A published story is featured in the Champion newsletter and earns 3 points of extra credit.
Keep learning and improving
- Complete the Champion Lessons, like this one.
- Complete the All-IN application and Champion self-assessment, now combined into one process.
- Take stock of your building's resources so you know what you have to work with.
The full Champion Best Practices guide spells all of this out and is your reference whenever you need it.
How your work is recognized
Champion contributions are measured through a simple scorecard that covers building engagement, the practices above, your training and participation, and your collaboration. Recognition includes certificates, mentions in the TSC e-newsletter, tiered Champion awards at Honorable Mention, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum, and end-of-year prize drawings. Champions are recognized within building-size groups, so you are compared fairly with buildings like yours, and improvement counts, not just size.
You are supported, not on your own
None of this means doing everything alone or building from scratch. NuStart provides ready-to-send content, a resource hub, this training, and a liaison who is here for you. Remember the idea behind the name: integrate with what is already moving in your building. The role is meant to be doable and rewarding, and this training is here to make sure it feels that way.
Try this · Your turnLook through the Champion Best Practices guide once, then pick the single responsibility that feels most natural to you and start there. You do not have to take on everything at once. Momentum builds from one good start.
